Installation & Maintenance.

Installation

With tongue and groove to all four sides, our boards are nice and easy to install. If you do choose to install yourself then please refer to our Installation Guidelines available below.

Our flooring is a ‘direct-stick’ type system. This provides a far superior and long lasting finish to some floor products which can be ‘floated’ on an underlay.

The typical process is for the flooring substrate (concrete or timber) is prepared to a flat, smooth surface. This is then sealed to prevent any moisture ingress from underneath with what is called a vapour barrier. Our engineered Oak boards are then stuck down to this surface.

As with everything, the more time spent planning, the more straightforward the installation will be.

Typical Installation Costs

Our floor boards can be installed by competent DIY’ers, carpenters or timber floor installers. Depending on the approach taken, the installation can cost from $55/m2 to $105/m2 + GST.

See below for a list of timber floor installers in your area. If you can’t find anyone suitable here, please get in touch.

Wet Area Installation

Yes, Summit Flooring can be installed in wet areas …

Since November 2021, engineered Oak flooring is no longer an ‘Acceptable Solution’ in wet areas (defined as kitchens, laundries, powder rooms and toilets).

However, this only means that a bit more paperwork is required as part of your Building Consent application to satisfy your local authority that the engineered Oak flooring system is compliant with the E3 revisions, as an ‘Alternative Solution’.

Please refer to our SF E3 AS1 Alternative Solutions documentation which can be submitted with your application for Building Consent to satisfy the E3 revisions. This refers to single unit dwellings. If you require the paperwork for an application in relation to multi-unit dwellings, please contact us as we can provide this specific to your circumstance.

We can also provide the impermeability test certification as required.

Maintenance

With a 9 coat Treffert lacquer coating system, the pre-finished flooring is extremely resilient to everything thrown at it … spillages, droppages, pets, kids.

As with any timber product, any spills or excess moisture should be removed as quickly as possible. However, due to the lacquer and UV treatment our flooring has a tough pre-finished coating which will withstand the everyday wear of family life.

To clean the floor, sweep or vacuum before mopping. This helps remove any dust or grit from the floor.  Never use harsh chemicals, only a safe detergent mix such as warm water and a few drops of dishwashing detergent. Use a microfibre flat bottom mop, and ring out to virtually dry before using. Avoid slopping large amounts of water onto the floor. This is only required as frequently as you would normally clean a hard floor.

For increased protection, there are a range of products by ‘Bona’ which can be used to prolong the surface finish and protection even longer.

Here is a selection Bona Products available in NZ.
